Epilepsy

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in children, yet it is often misunderstood. It is a condition characterized by recurrent seizures, which are sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain.

It's important to know that a single seizure does not mean a child has epilepsy. A diagnosis of epilepsy is typically made after a child has had two or more unprovoked seizures. The types of seizures can vary widely, from dramatic convulsions to subtle moments of unresponsiveness.

The causes of epilepsy are diverse. They can include genetic factors, brain injury, infections, or developmental disorders. In many cases, the exact cause is unknown.

With an accurate diagnosis and a proper treatment plan, most children with epilepsy can lead full and active lives. Management often involves anti-seizure medications, but other therapies may also be considered. As a pediatric neurologist, my goal is to work with each family to find the best approach for their child, which includes ongoing education and support for both the patient and their caregivers. Through my work with organizations like Care Epilepsy Ethiopia, I have seen firsthand the positive impact of raising public awareness and providing specialized training on epilepsy management.
